We're going through times of great turbulence which could escalate.
From gently funny to absolutely hilarious, the novel: ‘Salmon fishing in the Yemen’ by Paul Torday, was made into a film in 2011, starring Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt. This novel and film would be unthinkable now and it serves as a reminder that we need to treasure peace where we can find it.
The characters intertwine to create a comedy, which at times is bittersweet. Central to the drama is the story of an unlikely friendship between two men from different worlds. One is a sheikh with many wives; the other a humble fisheries expert, trapped in a loveless marriage and stuck in career backwater.
Their friendship is based on their mutual passion for fishing and bridges a cultural divide. The Yemen, however, is seething with political unrest that lies just under the water and erupts to give the film dramatic cliffhangers.
